ROP Courses
Valencia has a plethora of ROP classes to choose from to give students additional avenues to seek success.  Check out these 10.
 
 
 
1 -Careers with Children: Preschool Lab-
 
 
Are you patient, inventive, creative and organized? If so, then you are ready for the real-world setting. You learn to recognize developmental stages in children ages 2 ½ to 5 in the preschool lab. You’ll learn teaching methods that work to help little children love to learn in a happy, structured environment. This class prepares you for working with young children in preschool and home settings and for advanced training. Orange Coast College grants advanced placement and/or credits at the college to students who complete the course with grades of A or B. See your instructor for details.
 

 
2- Building Industry Technology Academy-  (Video)
 
                                                                           
 
If you love working with your hands, this four- year industry-supported academy might be right for you. In addition to learning carpentry/construction skills and power/hand tool care and use in the school lab, you’ll participate in building trades association contests, and you’ll have opportunities to volunteer for community projects such as Habitat for Humanity. You will be preparing for jobs in carpentry for the construction trades and further education in college building trades and architecture programs.
 

 
3- Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction)-
 
 
You’ll learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and investigation, crime scene photography and diagramming a crime scene. You’ll learn who to interview and what questions to ask. You’ll sharpen your reasoning skills, your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic science detention techniques. This class will prepare your for entry-level employment and college studies in the field.
 

 
4- Legal and Law Enforcement-
 
  
 
You’ll gain an understanding of what substance abuse does to the body and mind. You will also learn about criminal law, traffic and juvenile law, judicial proceedings, and emergency preparedness. Successful students will have the opportunity to participate in the field trips to justice institutions and ride-alongs with police officers. The class prepares you for advanced training.
 

 
5- Medical Careers Academy-
 
 
Medical Careers I- You’ll learn how to take vital signs, understand basic medical terminology, body mechanics, and body systems; and practice safety and infection control. You will identify roles and responsibilities of a variety of health care professionals, and study ethical standards required of health care providers, and the many socio-economic factors involved in health care. The class will prepare you for further study in health care professions.
 

 
6- Medical Assistant-Clinical Back Office-
 
 
You’ll learn how to read vital signs, administer electrocardiograms, perform venipuncture and basic lab procedures. You’ll also assist with minor surgery, administer some medicines, and understand pharmacology. With instructor approval, you will have internships in various medical offices and receive 150 hours of “hands-on” training.
 

 
7- Photography, Traditional-
 
 
You’ll learn portraiture, commercial photography and current techniques in photojournalism. The class includes black and white film developing, black and white negative printing, basic photographic presentation techniques, and use and care of photo equipment. The class prepares students for entry level jobs in photography studios, and college studies in photography, photo-journalism and art. Earn advanced placement or credits at Cypress or Orange Coast Colleges. Students who successfully complete this class (one year) are eligible for one year of UC-approved fine arts elective credit.
 

 
8- Retail Careers/General Merchandising CC/CVE-
 
 
Learn on the job in local outlets while earning graduation credits. This course prepares students for entry-level employment in retail careers through classroom instruction and on-the-job training. You’ll learn sales and marketing, security, shipping, receiving, customer service, visual display and inventory control. The course also prepares you for advanced business studies.
 

 
9- Retail Restaurant/Food Service Marketing Occupations CVE-
 
 
If you already have a job in a restaurant, you can earn elective graduation credits for your time on the job and broaden your job knowledge at the same time. This class will prepare you for marketing and service positions in restaurants. A combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction focuses on developing your management skills. The course also prepares you for advanced business studies.
 

 
10- Wood Manufacturing-
 
 
Love working with your hands? Are you creative? You’ll build projects such as furniture, children’s toys, and cabinetry to prepare for entry-level positions in the production of wood products. You’ll also prepare for advanced training as a finish carpenter and/or a production/ project manager.
