                                                                                                                  November 2010
From the President....

As the father of three Valencia Tigers and a fellow alum myself, I am still amazed at how quickly the high school year passes. Fortunately, I have a dedicated PTSA team that has been working very hard since well before the school year commenced.

Pam Jones coordinated our school registration assistance efforts and as a result our students were registered in half the time compared to prior years. Her tireless volunteers included Brenda Cheung, Amy Cooke, Gaydene Emmrich, Susie Gerjes, Peggy Hickman, Socorro Lapp, Erin McAlpine, Wendy Moldovan, Christine Montero, Sher Newman, Carol Reekstin, Jennie Rose, Linda Struiksma, and Sonal Talati. Thank you to all of our parents and students who stopped by the PTSA table, aptly run by Wendy, and demonstrated your support for our school by joining PTSA or by signing up to volunteer for hospitality events. Many of you did both!

Amy and Sher organized our well-attended Valencia Staff Luncheon the first Friday of school. They had many volunteers assisting them in this endeavor who did a great job as attested to by the many positive comments received from staff members who attended.

I was pleased to see many of you at our annual Back-to-School Night on September 22nd. Many of you signed up to participate in our two promotions this year with Ralphs and the Orange County Register. To date, we have received $1,250 from the Register with another $600 to follow. Although the promotional period for the Register has ended, please note that if you have not already done so, you may continue to sign up for the Ralphs Community Contributions program. Last year, we raised over $800 per quarter. You can help us reach our current year goal of $1,000 per quarter by signing up today and shopping at Ralphs. It costs you nothing to enroll in the program and up to 4% of your purchases are donated to your VHS PTSA. If you’re interested in enrolling, please follow the Ralphs link and related instructions on this website or contact me or Pam Jones. All monies raised from these promotions will be used to fund senior scholarships, teacher grants, and our annual gift to the school. The more you participate, the more we can give away!

If you’re interested in being more involved from a hands-on perspective, I invite you to join us at our monthly board meetings held the third Monday or Wednesday of the month at 7 PM in the VHS library. At each meeting, in addition to conducting our monthly business, Mr. Bell provides a thorough update on what’s happening around campus. It’s a great way to stay informed on everything that’s going on at VHS. For a list of meetings, please refer to the PTSA website calendar link.

We’re always looking for more folks to get involved; one current need is for someone to lead our Reflections Program for next year. We were unable to offer this fun, creative student visual/performing arts program this fall because we were unable to find someone to chair the program. When we have offered this program in prior years, students have enjoyed displaying their talents while also having the chance to win prizes at the local, county, and state level as well. If you are interested in exploring this opportunity further, please contact me.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments you might have. I sincerely appreciate your assistance and support.

Very truly yours,

Mike Grismer
