Turn in a copy of your speech here. You will need to have a hard copy of your speech when you present - YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO READ FROM YOUR PHONE - you need paper or note cards.

Most high schools choose the top 1 or 2 students of the graduating class to five their graduation speeches; Valencia High School gives its seniors the rare and wonderful opportunity to apply for that distinction. Over the years, two or three graduating seniors, some with high GPAs some with not so high GPAs, have given marvelous and inspiring speeches.

We have decided to have you write and present your graduation speech in front of the class. This speech will follow the same instructions given to those seniors who intend to actually apply for the honor (and I hope that you will consider actually applying!)
You must turn in a typed copy of the speech with an original TITLE (“Graduation Speech” is NOT an appropriate title!) to me by TUESDAY, May 31st no later than 8 a.m. in Google Classroom. (All speeches must be ready to be presented on the first day; however, since not all can go first, you will be assigned a day/time at random.) For the speech, you may use notecards or the printed out copy, but you may not use a digital device. You will be docked 10 points per day (including weekends) if it is late.
If you make significant changes to this speech after you turn it in to me, you will be docked points, so practice it before turning it in to make sure it’s long (or short) enough.
Remember, you are not just speaking to seniors; your audience includes District and School Board officials, faculty and staff, as well as parents and friends of graduates. Also, you are speaking to & for the ENTIRE senior class, not just the AP/IB students, but ALL members of the class. The limit your speech to 3 MINUTES. Significantly going less than that time, or longer does affect your grade.
You need something to grab the audiences’ attention at the beginning. Some students start with a brief introduction – it can be a welcome to the attendees. However, some very good speeches don’t start with a welcome. BTW, graduation starts at 6 pm, so it’s “good evening.”
You’ll need an ending. Make sure your audience knows you are finished.
BE UNIQUE and ORIGINAL! Stay Away from clichés, over-used metaphors and banal truisms.
Although you are not limited to these ideas, in general, the following are common topics included graduation speeches; remember that these are common and can end up being cliché:
a look at the last four years
how VHS has played an important part in the seniors’ lives; how it’s helped seniors grow/mature
reflection on experiences the we’ve all shared or the influences of popular culture
reasons we’re all gathered together as a class
how VHS has prepared the seniors for the future
VHS as a microcosm of life
Commencement means “to begin”
Value of Valencia
What you’ve learned here at VHS
Valencia as family
Journey
How the grads will affect the future
Advice for the future
Consider using a metaphor or using a phrase that you start off with and return to at the end of the speech. Some clever ones included references to current popular TV shows, commercials, or popular phrases.
PRACTICE – Don’t lose points for sloppy preparation, or a speech that is too short or too long.

NOTE: if you are interested in giving one of the speeches at graduation, TRY-OUTS are after school. Sign up early in the ASB office so you don’t end up with late try-out time.
