Welcome to AP United States History (APUSH)!

2019-2020 Summer Assignment

  • Welcome to AP-U.S. History (APUSH). The following assignments are due the first day of class.
Note: You will be tested on this material within the first two weeks of school. In addition, the successful completion of these assignments will enable you to continue on an enriching learning experience that will better prepare you for college. On the other hand, the failure to complete these assignments will negatively affect your performance in the class and may ultimately result in your reassignment to a regular U.S. History class.
  • Assignment #1:
View the online lectures and take lecture notes for American Pageant Ch. 1-5. You may access these at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-69ThEyf7-A8PgWRxaH3Qi3dD_ZUu2BF
Lecture notes may be written in whichever format you prefer. However, lecture notes should cover the entire lecture and be as detailed as possible. In addition, depending on the length of the lecture, lecture notes should consist of a minimum of one-two pages per chapter.
Note: Single page size and content requirements are as follows: 8 1/2" x 11" lined notebook paper, take notes on both front and back and from top to bottom, do not skip lines!
In addition, lecture notes should be handwritten and in your own words.
No typed and/or copied work will be accepted!
  • Assignment #2: Read carefully Chapters 1-5 of the textbook American Pageant. Note: Textbooks will not be issued to you until the Fall. Please refer to the "American Pageant" links posted at the bottom of this page for pdf. files of American Pageant Chapters 1-5.
  • Assignment #3: As you read each chapter, completely answer each set of Focus Questions for American Pageant Chapters 1-5. To access the Focus Questions, click on the pdf. file for Unit One-Focus Questions at the bottom of this page. All Focus Questions must be completed in your own writing. No typed and/or copied work will be accepted! It is not required that you write out each question. Only that you label each assignment by chapter and that you provide a number for each answer. Answers should be written in complete sentences and provide as much detail as possible. Answers consisting of only a sentence or two are not nearly detailed enough to meet established performance standards for this class and will likely be rejected. Please begin Focus Questions for each Chapter on a separate sheet of paper.

Note: For an example of what would be considered an ideal response, see the sample question/answer below.

Sample Question #1 : What developments set the stage for “a cataclysmic shift in the course of history?”

Sample Answer #1: Changes in Europe encouraged exploration. Europeans had a high demand for imported luxury goods which encouraged long distance ocean travel. The Portuguese had demonstrated the ability to sail long distances successfully. Africa had been established as a source for slaves by the Portuguese. Powerful nation-states began to form which could finance expensive exploration. The Renaissance nurtured an ambitious optimistic spirit. The development of printing presses helped to spread knowledge. The compass, developed from Arabic and Chinese origins, helped sailors find where they were going.

As you can see, a good rule to remember is "When in doubt, keep on writing!"

WARNING:
DO NOT PROCRASTINATE THIS SUMMER! NO PARTIAL AND/OR INCOMPLETE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED AND LATE WORK WILL CARRY A SUBSTANTIAL PENALTY. DUE TO THE ENORMOUS VOLUME OF MATERIAL THAT MUST BE COVERED IN THIS COURSE, YOU MUST STAY ON TOP OF YOUR SUMMER READING AND COMPLETE ALL OF YOUR ASSIGNMENTS BY THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.

HAVE A FANTASTIC SUMMER! SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER!
