AP English Literature & Composition

Course Description

Welcome to Language Arts 4 - AP English Literature and Composition. Mrs. Harnett and I will be teaching this course this year. During the course of the year you will learn to closely analyze poetry and prose and write essays on those selections. You will also be reading the following novels:
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (Signet Classic edition)
The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini (Riverhead Publishing)
The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy (Signet Classic edition)
Hamlet by Shakespeare (Folger or Cliffs Complete editions)
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde (Avon edition)
A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen

We encourage you to purchase your own copies of these to mark in. It's a skill you'll need in college, and it's great to practice now. Note: these are the editions we have; other publishers are fine.  See AP Planning Calendar for dates we'll be reading these books.\

Mrs. Harnett and I hope you're in the process of writing your college application essay(s) so that you will not feel so stressed at deadline time. Remember, if you want me to edit and make suggestions on your application essays, I need some time -- so don't procrastinate.  Also, don't forget to work on the Senior Info Sheet - that's what you'll need to hand to those adults you ask to write your letters of recommendation.
