LA1-H-PERIOD 5 Assignments

Should be around 1 page in length
● Typed or handwritten is fine.
● You need to submit a HARD COPY -that means a printed copy or handwritten piece of paper. Filowitz will NOT read your letter - only to eyeball it to make sure you wrote something.
● You will need to bring in a self-addressed envelope and a “Forever Stamp”

PICK AN ADDRESS THAT YOU KNOW SOMEONE WILL BE AT IN 3 YEARS (that way even if you move or change schools, you can still get your letter). If for some reason you don't get your letter (there are always a bunch that get returned for one reason or another), Filowitz will attempt to find you in person on campus. But, if you're not at VHS in 2026, and the letter gets returned, it will be difficult to get it to you and your letter will go into the small pile of undelivered letters from over the years - I can't throw them away, I feel too bad!

Crossword Puzzle = 20 points


I've included two ways to access the crossword puzzle, but you ONLY NEED TO SUBMIT ONE of the crossword puzzles. If you're having trouble with the crossword PDF - you can print it out, fill it in, and submit a picture of it.

You only need your group leader to submit your summary. Indicate all the full names of your group members and what each member's role was in the project. If you want to bring in any LEGOS from home, you are free to do so, but make sure you know which ones are yours and get them back when we disassemble the projects.

Your summary should tell us what scene you have created, what characters are there, the location, the main events of the plot that occur during your scene, and any additional information you think we need to know to better understand your creation.

You do NOT have to do the writing assignment at the end.

For this assignment, you will need to create a Valentine's Day card that will be FROM one of the characters in any of the literature we have studied this year (Any of the short story characters, Of Mice and Men, The House On Mango Street, The Odyssey, or To Kill A Mockingbird). Try to be witty - the text of your card should have something to do with the plot/aspect of the work you're using.

Use a PDF Editor - remember if you save your annotated PDF as a new document, you'll need to x out the attached pdfs (or it won't give you anywhere to attach your work because it thinks you already have a document attached to your assignment). OR if you want you can write your answers on a google doc and just submit that, but cut/paste the questions in, you can't have answers with no questions.

You will only have a TINY bit of time to work on this tomorrow, so make sure you use your time wisely!

Introduction: You are about to read the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The story is set in the sleepy town of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus Finch is asked to defend a black man charged with the rape of a white woman. Through the young eyes of his children, Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores the irrationality of adult attitudes toward race and class in the Deep South of the 1930’s. The consciousness of a town steeped in prejudice, violence, and hypocrisy is pricked by the quiet heroism of one man’s struggle for justice. To best understand the lessons of this great novel, you must first understand the author, the times, and the place in which the story is set. This is set in the same time as Of Mice and Men, and deals with similar themes of racial inequality, sexism, loneliness, and empathy.

Instructions: For the next two days, you will be working on a To Kill A Mockingbird Webquest (see below). You will need to answer all of the questions in the webquest using complete sentences and thorough answers. Include what websites you get the information from especially if several options are listed. Your task for this Webquest is to visit various websites (provided for you) to learn the needed background information before starting the novel. Fill in the charts below using the articles provided in each link. Each article has its own chart to fill out with questions about the article. These articles provide helpful background information needed in order to understand our novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

WHEN IS THIS DUE? I am giving you two days to complete this, because that is how long it should take. If you are not done by Tuesday (1/31/2023), you will need to finish it at home as homework – it will be due on Thursday (2/2/2023). You may do the assignment directly on this document, just do something to separate your answers from your questions (like a different color or font for your text).

The Process: You will be working in small groups, split into breakout rooms. However, you are not required to work in groups. Also, while you are allowed to work together, you must each submit your own copy of the assignment. There will be one Breakout Room for those who want to work alone and others for those who want to work in groups. You can may select who you would like to work with.

Why Are We Doing This?

On his journey, Odysseus happened to bring his iPod – he had it with him as he traveled to the Land of the Lotus Eaters, listened to tunes as he fought Polyphemus, and scrolled through songs as he encountered Circe and Calypso.

But his because Odysseus’ iPod is ancient, it only held 10 songs - The question: What 10 songs did Odysseus have on his iPod (name of song & artist who sings/performs it) AND WRITE AT LEAST TWO SENTENCES FOR EACH SONG EXPLAINING WHY HE HAD THAT PARTICULAR SONG.

Ny hitting "control" & "enter" at the same time - it will create a page break that automatically takes you to the next page.
If an entry is supposed to be a full page, it needs to cover the WHOLE page - three sentences are NOT sufficient. it's a MINIMUM of a half-page for EVERY ENTRY.
These are WRITING POINTS - and are VERY helpful or hurtful to your grade.

We have been selected to participate in an AVID Student Agency survey. The data collected through this survey is designed to help us understand the extent that students build relationships, persist through obstacles, and develop academic, social, emotional, and professional knowledge and skills.
