UNITS OF CREDIT: Five each semester
PREREQUISITES: Keyboarding Skills
SOFTWARE USED: Microsoft Office–Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
Windows Operating System, Internet Applications, Electronic Portfolio, Scanning, etc.
LAB HOURS: Before and After School: Library Lab. Time as posted

LAB FEE: We request that each student support the Computer
Technology Class by contributing a lab fee of $5.00. This fee is for the entire year. It helps help offset the cost of laser cartridges (both B & W and color), etc.
At the end of this semester course, you will be able to: (subject to change)
1. Operate a computer with confidence and use skills as a tool to improve achievement.
2. Use the Windows operating system to manage files, create folders, control printing, and other processes needed for computer operations. Use Windows accessories (i.e. Use WordPad, Notepad, or Paint to create drawings, etc.)
3. Use computer applications software: Microsoft Office with Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheet), Access (database), and PowerPoint (presentations).
4. Learn to use the Internet efficiently and complete online projects.
5. Understand and use the vocabulary of today's computer world.
6. Proper care for computers, printers, and other devices (electronic media, storage devices, etc.).
7. Keep a well-organized, complete reference notebook and develop an electronic portfolio.
8. Understand ethical issues in use of software.
9. Develop an awareness of career opportunities in the computer field.
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS GRADING CRITERIA
Grades will be based on the following scale.
A = 100 and 90 percent = Awesome, All done...
B = 80 and 70 percent = Basically Beautiful, BUT...
C = 60 and 50 percent = Average
D = 40 and 30 percent = Didn't quite finish...YET
F = 20 and 10 percent = Failed to complete...for now

Books are to remain in the classroom. Use the book that is numbered to match your computer number.
NO USB-STORAGE DEVICES (or similar storage media) ALLOWED ON CAMPUS.
ALL WORK MUST BE DONE AT VHS—using VHS’s computers. Sorry, no exceptions.
SUPPLIES NEEDED: 1 blank CD (If you want a copy of your work at the end of the semester.)
1 notebook with 10 section dividers
NOTEBOOK/ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO—100 or 200 points (each semester is different)
You will need a separate 3-ring notebook to be in class every day with TEN (10) tabbed and labeled section dividers. Examples of labels are: Windows Basics, How to…, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Computer Components, Internet, and Final Challenge Project.
This notebook must be for Computer Technology ONLY! Get in the habit of putting all graded work, work in progress, handouts, etc. in your notebook. You will keep your notebook in the bookcase as directed by the teacher. The notebook must be well organized and complete. ALL handouts, assignments, exercises, and notes are to be in your notebook... No loose papers, please.
The second semester students will establish an electronic portfolio. This will consist of the best work samples created by each individual student. Val Tech students are required to maintain this electronic portfolio the entire time they are enrolled at Valencia High School.
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS - COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY 1A/1B
Valencia High School
1. You are expected to know and follow ALL computer lab rules (See AUP).
2. Your Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) must be on file in the counseling office. There must be an orange Internet sticker on your ID card.
3. Computer disks are not allowed in the classroom. All work must be completed using VHS computers. NO WORK MAY BE COMPLETED AT HOME OR OFF CAMPUS.
4. Use the books that have the same number as your assigned computer. Books remain in the classroom. If your assigned book is not on the bookshelf, tell your teacher immediately so we can begin tracing the “disappearance.”
5. If you have been absent, have your parent contact the school’s attendance office (714-996-4970 x 3237). All absences must be cleared by the Attendance Office. No exceptions.
6. Be in the classroom when the bell rings. Get your book and folder; check the board or your assignment sheet for the day’s assignment. Get to work right away. Use your time efficiently.
7. Cleanup at the end of class. Return any materials and put away any books or other supplies. Return to your seat and stay until the teacher dismisses the class. The passing bell does not dismiss students. The teacher dismisses students. Be sure all papers are picked up, and your computer and work area around it are clean. Walk to the wastebasket to throw away waste paper. No throwing anything in class. Please LOG OFF after each period. The last period of the day can SHUT DOWN (turn off) the computer—and monitor, too, please.
8. Be respectful to your classmates, the teacher, and others in the classroom. Do not use swear words or inappropriate language.
9. Do not wear hats in the classroom. All students must follow the dress code at all times.
10. Food, drink and gum chewing are not allowed in the computer lab. NO EXCEPTIONS.
11. Take care of bathroom necessities between classes, at break and at lunch. You will be excused from class to use the restroom only in an emergency.
12. If you need to see your counselor, you must make an appointment, have an appointment number, AND go at your scheduled time.
13. Writing on the desks, walls, computers, or in books is not allowed.
14. Honesty and integrity are expected in all aspects of your classroom behavior.
15. ELECTRONIC DEVICES (CELL PHONES, I-PODs, MP-3 players, RADIOS, etc.) ARE NOT TO BE USED DURING CLASS. If they’re out, they will be confiscated.
The Library computer lab is open mornings and after school.
Any late work will be accepted up to a certain date (to be announced), but it will be marked down depending on how late the work is.
