National Honor Society
Course Description
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is a society composed of the most well-rounded students a school has to offer. These students take academically-rigorous and challenging courses, including AP/IB/Honors classes, involve themselves in clubs on campus, are involved in extra-curricular activities on and off campus, and provide service to their school and community. They push themselves throughout all four years of high school, and strive to make themselves, their school, and their community a better place.
NHS membership is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. A faculty council nominates and elects members based on scholarship (3.5 minimum weighted academic GPA), exemplary character, proven leadership and service.
Nominated juniors and seniors will be sent an information form during the first weeks of the third quarter.
Students may be excluded from NHS if they fail to uphold the Society's standards. For more information, visit the NHS website at http://www.nhs.us .
Frequently asked questions:
Q) How do I become a member of NHS?
A) Juniors and Seniors with a minimum 9th-12th grade academic weighted gpa of 3.5 or
higher will receive an application during the first weeks of the second semester.
Q) I turned in my application. Why wasn't I invited?
A) Membership in NHS is granted to those with excellence in academics, character,
leadership, and service. One of the following reasons may be why your application
was turned down by the faculty council:
Application was submitted past the due date
Application was not signed or dated
Applicant did not have the minimum gpa
Applicant's academic coursework was not rigorous enough throughout her/his
academic career (ex: stopped after only 2 years of math, taking few academic
classes in current year, not taking any AP/IB/Honors classes)
Applicant was lacking in other areas on the application (community/co-curricular
activities, leadership, work experience/recognition/awards)
Q) I'm a junior and was not accepted into NHS. May I still apply next year?
A) If you have the minimum gpa by the second semester of your senior year, you are
eligible to receive an application. Try to improve upon the areas you were lacking in
as a junior. Get more involved in clubs and in the community; take more challenging
courses; take leadership roles.
