Curriculum Paper for Life Science
Course Contents: What is life? What makes us living beings? How can we identify a living thing? All of these questions and more will be answered in this class. Students will study many aspects of the living world. Together we will discover much about this amazing thing called life. During this year we will study many aspects of cells, genetics, ecology, biotechnology, and physiology.
General Class Rules:
1. Respect your fellow students, the teacher, school and personal property
2. Come to class on time and prepared to learn
3. Know when it is time to talk and when it’s time to work
4. Follow all instructions/directions - class time is not free time
5. No personal grooming, make up, chewing gum, eating or drinking in class
• Maintain a clean classroom at all times
• Refrain from inappropriate language or comments
• Science equipment should be used with care and as instructed
Positive Consequences:
o Good Citizenship Grade
o Verbal Praise
o Respect of peers
o Sense of positive self-esteem
o Positive comments on report card, to parents
Negative Consequences:
o Warning
o Detention
o Call home
o Referral
Consequences for Tardies:
o First 3 tardies = warning, stay after class
o 4th and 5th tardies = Parent contact, teacher detention
o 6th tardy = Referral to Director of Attendance: contract/parent conference/4 hr
Saturday work program
o 7th tardy = May be dropped from class/school transfer if less than five classes
Severe Clause:
Students will not use or bring any type of weapons, drugs, or alcohol to school. Fighting and serious disruptions are not tolerated. All of these will result in an immediate referral or suspension. Behavior that is purposely disrespectful will receive an immediate detention or referral.
Required Materials
You are required to bring the following items to class every day:
o science notebook with lined paper
o pen
o pencil
o colored pencils
Grading Policies:
Calculating Grades:
A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 0-59%
Grade will consist of:
- 60% class work, homework, labs, projects
- 40% tests and quizzes
A limited amount of extra credit will be made available. This will consist of less than 5% of total points earned in the semester.
In addition, class participation points will be awarded for contributing to class discussions. This will also count toward your citizenship grade.
Homework and Tests:
1 Must be turned in on time (points will be taken off for late work)
2 Must be neat and legible with name and/or number at top right side of page
3 Homework packets must be in order with points calculated according to rubric
4 Make up work is allowed after excused absences only. You must have make up work stamped immediately. It will not be stamped if you wait until homework packets are due.
5 Schedule test make ups immediately upon returning to school after absence. They may be taken at lunch, after or before school.
6 Grades will be posted online. Be sure to check your grades for accuracy and to keep track of your progress in class. If you have concerns about your grade please talk to me after class.
Academic Dishonesty:
1 Will not be tolerated
2 All material turned in must be entirely your own work
1st offense – student will receive a zero and a warning
2nd offense – a zero on the assignment, a parent conference, a contract
3rd offense – a zero on the assignment, a parent conference, possible class drop
