Japanese 4AP / IBSL / IBHL (Period 1)
Course Description
AP Japanese language, IBSL and IBHL, and Level 4 Japanese emphasize linguistic performance in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing at the intermediate low to mid proficiency level for AP, IBSL and Level 4 students, and at the mid to high level proficiency for IBHL students as set by the ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages). Students practice the interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes within the four language skill areas and the class is conducted entirely in Japanese, except for the explanation of complex grammatical and cultural concepts. There is a focus upon technology with the mastery of communication and keyboarding skills via computer for AP students and a focus upon the IB core of communication and media, global issues and social relationships for the IBSL and IBHL students. IBHL students are also required to read authentic short stories and/or a novel in Japanese. Level 4, AP and IB students will learn 400 kanji upon completion of the course and IBHL students will learn 600 kanji upon the completion of the course.
